Hello and welcome back to my blog!
Today’s post shows you some of the potting on I did over the last week, along with more progress made in The Fruit Garden and in Teddy’s Garden this month.
Potting on in The Greenhouse
Hazel and beech hedging
I have a mixture of hazel and beech hedging that has been dug up from various parts of the garden this year.
The first of those is the hazel hedging that I dug up from the far end side of The Fruit Garden. Some of this hedging had been left planted just outside of the fruit cage when we erected it, so would become impossible to maintain properly:

All of these hazels have been potted up in pots for now:

The beech hedging was also dug up from The Woodland Garden. This hedging never really took off, as I planted it late in 2024, we had very hot dry weather and then I forgot to keep it thoroughly watered…
I dug these hedges up so that I could plant the evergreen hedging around the edge of The Woodland Garden, as you can see pictured below:

After I dug up the beech hedging, I put them in a bucket temporarily. That temporary situation lasted longer than intended, so I finally potted them on over the last week after I realised that the bucket had been filled with rain water.

I don’t yet have a firm plan in my mind about where I will plant both the hazel and beech hedging, or whether I will plant them together or separately. They may be planted in Teddy’s Garden, or an area that will become a vegetable garden. I haven’t yet revealed the site for the vegetable garden…
Erigeron ‘Profusion’
Other potting on including some erigeron. I actually sowed these in July 2024!
I recall that these were either too small in 2024 to plant out, or the weather must have turned, so I have been over-wintering them indoors on our bedroom windowsil ever since.
When I was moving these out into my greenhouse, I accidently dropped the tray, so I ended up having to pot these on:

I will be hardening these off over the next few weeks and planting them out in the coming weeks.

Digitalis ‘Sutton’s Apricot’
I also spent some time potting on some digitalis that I sowed in July 2024. I think this was the same situation as the erigeron and why they’ve stayed in my greenhouse.

These digitalis have been ready to pot on for some time, so I was glad to finally get these done:

Like the erigeron, I will be hardening these off and planting them out over the coming weeks. I plan on planting these in The Woodland Garden and the semi-shaded border in The Suntrap.
More progress in The Fruit Garden and Teddy’s Garden
I have also been making some major progress in The Fruit Garden this month, which has had the knock-on impact of progressing Teddy’s Garden.
You’ll recall that I recently installed an arch on one side of The Fruit Garden, to create a fruiting archway with two apple trees:

You can read my post about the fruiting archway here:
Well, at the other side of the garden, there are going to be rows of raised garden beds for growing fruit.
Raised beds in The Fruit Garden
The idea for raised beds actually came about because we needed to create a fence or safety barrier on the right side of The Fruit Garden, that has about a 2 metre straight drop down into The Suntrap:

We also already had two lots of ton bags of loamy soil from when I dug up all the grass in The Woodland Garden in April 2023 and left it in large builder’s sacks to decompose:

Both of these bags were sitting in Teddy’s Garden and needed to be emptied. They were also far too heavy to move, so using that soil to fill raised garden beds, would also clear space in Teddy’s Garden and this was the ideal solution for both areas. I would recommend this method if you have a grassed area to clear and want to create your own loamy soil for filling raised beds. You will just need patience to wait for the grass to decompose!
More clearing in Teddy’s Garden
You may also recall that at the end of March 2025, the Mr and I had moved the old compost pile to its new site in The Woodland Garden and a stick pile was created:

I will be creating a dead hedge with all of the stick material (updates coming soon).
Well, after using almost all of the soil in the two bags to fill the raised beds in The Fruit Garden, I was then able to use one of the empty bags for collating the stick pile and make it easier to move around for now:

The Mr and I have now almost filled all of the raised beds in The Fruit Garden, but we have a final one to arrive for the other side. Here is a sneak peek of one side of the garden beds so far:

I will be adding in various supports for training fruit trees and other fruits before I start properly planting out this year. More updates to follow!
I hope you enjoyed reading this post and seeing how things are progressing. I am finding myself working on multiple projects right now, so everything feels quite busy, but I am keeping my mind on the fact that we won’t need to do all of these jobs in the coming years! It has been really fun seeing how The Fruit Garden is starting to take shape too, as it was always an awkward part of the garden.
I hope you are all able to get out in your gardens and green spaces this bank holiday weekend. Until next time, happy gardening 🙂
