Propagating strawberry plants and adding a gorgeous new dahlia to the garden

Hello and welcome back to my blog.

Today’s short post is to show you the new plant I have added to the garden and how I have been increasing my supply of strawberry plants.

I recently wrote a blog post telling you about some strawberry plants ‘Elan’ that I planted in large troughs. Since then, I moved the strawberry troughs into the fruit cage. I wrote about my new fruit cage here, for those that are interested.

The strawberries have been sending out runners prolifically over the last few weeks. I know I have the option of cutting them back, which would increase the amount of fruit they produce this year, but I’m quite keen to increase my supply of strawberry plants so that I can get a larger harvest next year.

So, to propagate the strawberry plants, I filled small pots with compost and then pinned the runners to the compost. They should root, put on growth and then I will cut them off from the mother plant.

I am considering what sort of system I want to use for growing the strawberries in the fruit cage in the future. It seems I am limited with floor space, but I have spare vertical space to use… This needs time to mull over my options.

I also wanted to share with you all a beautiful dahlia plant I picked up from our local garden centre, as a present to myself for my birthday.

This is ‘Rebecca’s World’, a really interesting cherry-red dahlia, splashed with soft white/pink petals. Each flower has unique colouring.

I potted it up in a larger pot and paired it with some leucanthemums ‘crazy daisy’ that I have growing in pots. Put together, they make an interesting focal feature on the patio (aka, The Honeysuckle Nook), where they can sit and dazzle.

I will either put the dahlia pot in a protected place for Winter, or dig up the dahlia to put into storage for Winter. I am interested to see next year how I can propagate from this to increase my supply over time.

That’s all for today. Last weekend I started working on another new area in the garden, which I will post about soon!
