Planting an evergreen clematis and potting on in the greenhouse

Hello and welcome back to my blog.

I’ve been away recently, so I haven’t found time to post. Today’s blog post shows you what I have been getting up to over the last few weeks and what has been blooming in the garden.

Clematis armandii ‘Apple blossom’

Awhile ago I purchased an evergreen clematis online and it arrived recently.

I have planted this on the archway entrance to The Suntrap. It will give year round structure and beautiful flowers in the Spring that carry an almond fragrance.

I plan to train this over the archway and then cloak it over the staircase rails/wall over time. I think it will look beautiful!

Potting on in the greenhouse

Forget-me-not

Back in the Summer, I sowed some forget-me-not seeds, which I have now finally gotten round to separating and potting on.

I have a large amount of these now and have various places I could plant them enmass. I will either plant them out in a few weeks (weather dependant) or wait until Spring 2025.

Digitalis purpurea (foxglove)

‘Sutton’s apricot’

I also sowed some foxglove in Summer that I purchased from Sarah Raven. As their name suggests, these will be soft apricot shades of foxgloves that I will be planting around the garden. I have not yet decided where.

I potted them on over the last weekend. Again, I will either plant them out in a few weeks after they have matured further, or I will wait until Spring 2025.

Other jobs

Due to the limits on my time recently, I have been doing small manageable tasks around the garden when possible.

One of those jobs has been training the evergreen honeysuckle down the wall that borders The Honeysuckle Nook. I decided to do this once I saw the honeysuckle scrambling down the wall. If left untrained, it will take over the entire flower border.

I draped netting over the wall so that the honeysuckle has something to twine around and so that I can tie it into the net. I don’t want the yearly maintenance task of painting the walls, so covering as many of the walls with plants will hide them, whilst also add beauty and interest.

Other key plants right now

There are a few plants still blooming recently that I wanted to document for my future reference and also share with you. These have included:

Clematis montana ‘Elizabeth’

This is a really pretty clematis I planted months ago in The Wild Borders. I have largely left it alone and it has taken off with new growth. I have occasionally tied in some of the new growth, but other wise it is happy romping away by its own accord.

It has also just bloomed unexpectedly, which is likely due to some of the last of the year milder weather we have had recently:

Other plants still blooming right now are all the roses and the honeysuckle:

That’s all for today. I’m still waiting for the hazel hedging to go dormant and the crocosmia to die down before some major jobs can be undertaken. It won’t be long until that happens!

Happy gardening 🙂
