In the greenhouse, dreaming of Summertime flowers: hollyhocks and lavender

Hello and welcome back to my blog 🙂

Today’s post is a shorter one showing you some of things I have been getting up to in my greenhouse, as I have had a busy week out in the garden now that Spring 2025 is well on the horizon.

I will be back with an extra post this week, in addition to the usual Sunday morning post I put up on my blog every week. Stay tuned for that post in the next few days.

I hope you’ve all able to get out into your gardens and green spaces, or do some indoor seed sowing if you’re still waiting for the brighter and warmer weather to arrive. I am so excited for the growing year ahead!

Another lavender hedge

I recently started up an Instagram page for The Charming Nook, where I post additional content not seen on this blog. If you follow me on there, you will have seen that I posted a video showing that I recently received 120 lavender plugs plants (‘Hidcote’ variety).

I will be using these plants to create dwarf lavender hedging around all of the areas in my back gardens:

  • The Wild Borders
  • The Window Boxes
  • The Honeysuckle Nook
  • The Suntrap
  • The Fruit Garden
  • The new mystery area (!)

If you have read my blog for some time, you may recall that I previously grew the same variety of lavender hedging that edges all of the front gardens (The Welcome Patch, The Cherry Tree Avenue and The Woodland Garden). I received this in 2023 and potted them on for about 5 months before planting them out:

Last year, the lavender put on such a wonderful show all along the front gardens of our property, flowering for weeks and weeks on end:

Even when the temperature started dropping as the seasons waned on, the bees were still active on the lavender, which I loved watching.

The lavender still looked neat and tidy over Winter 2024/25 and it added some much needed evergreen structure:

You can read my posts showing you the creation of The Cherry Tree Avenue and The Welcome Patch here.

I’ll be caring for all 120 of these new lavenders in the exact same way as I did previously, simply potting them on into gradually larger pots and watering them. For now, the lavender is sitting indoors on a bright windowsil to protect them from the cold whilst they are still young.

I will post updates as things progress. I am hoping that I will be planting out the lavenders later on this year and they should provide flowers next year 🙂

A cottage garden classic for 2025: Hollyhocks

I also have some hollyhocks that I sowed from seed back in 2024, but I never posted on my blog about them.

These hollyhocks are from seeds I purchased from Sarah Raven known as ‘Giant Single Mixed’. They have stayed in my unheated greenhouse over the Winter and I just potted them on.

These are biennial flowers and will flower in their second year, which will be this year. I am minded to sow some more hollyhocks so that I have some for next year too… I will also harvest the seeds from these flowers this year, so that I more seeds for sowing.

Again, if you want to see more interactive content from my garden, follow me on Instagram. I will be uploading a video about the hollyhocks on there very soon.

I am planning on planting out all of the hollyhocks next to walls and fences all around my garden, so that they can easily be supported and tied in.

Stayed tuned to see how they grow! I am really excited to see the flowers from these, as they reach over 2 metres high 🙂

More daffodils

I also had some leftover daffodils that I had forgotten about, which I found in a box in my greenhouse, already sprouting:

I decided that rather than letting them go to waste, I would pot them up into a shallow pot and bring them indoors:

You will notice that I did not set these at their usual depth in the soil and that should be a fine for a temporary indoor plant display.

These daffodils are sitting indoors on a bright windowsil. These may or may not flower now, but at least they can grow on and I will plant them out as usual in Autumn 2025.

That’s all for today! As mentioned earlier, I will be back with an extra post this week, in addition to the usual Sunday post I put up on my blog every week. Stay tuned for that post in the next few days.

Until next time, happy gardening 🙂
